Government of the Ming Dynasty

The Ming Dynasty was a monarchy ruled by an emperor. It used a civil service system, which means that officals had to pass government exams. Unlike many previous dynasties,  the Ming Dynasty had one department--the Secretariat. The Secretariat controlled the Ming Dynasty's six ministies. All day-to-day affairs were looked over by a director until they were passed down to the emperor.

These are the responsibilities for each ministry in the Ming Dynasty:

  • Personnel--in charge of all matters relating to government employees, promotions, etc.

  • Revenue--in charge of tax collection, currency, and state revenues.

  • Rites--in charge of all ceremonial matters and priesthood.

  • War--responsible for all matters dealing with the armed forces. Also ran courier system.

  • Justice--responsible for running Judicial process and the penal process

  • Public Works--responsible for construction projects and maintenance of the roads.
